A PDA and GPS System... All in One

Techstination feature for Monday, July 31, 2006

A PDA and a GPS Navigation system…all in one. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Combining a PDA device with GPS capability is nothing new, ALK Technologies has been selling GPS add on capability for Pocket PCs for years. But if you are looking for the smallest all in one device, Pharos has packed a lot into its Traveler GPS 525. It's tiny by stand alone PDA standards…and the 525 has a built in GPS receiver with no protruding antenna….along with built in WiFi and Bluetooth capability. VP Rick Sill….

"The GPS market today is made up of products that I would like to call bigger and rounder and bulgier. Whereas for people who travel going through airports, they want to make sure they have something that's lightweight and compact. And that's what the 525 is. It also has an embedded GPS receiver. The real fun thing about this product is that it's got built in WiFi for quick access to the Internet."

While the size can be an advantage…slipping easily into a shirt pocket….it can also be a disadvantage. A larger screen is a plus when it comes to GPS navigation. And the built in speaker…for audible directions….can be hard to hear when you're on the move. You can find the Pharos 525 online for about 500 dollars. The company has plenty of competition. We'll outline some of those devices in the days to come. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
