WiMax Everywhere? Almost Says Sprint

Techstination feature for Friday, August 18, 2006

Wireless high speed Internet…almost everywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sprint has announced plans to spend about three billion dollars over the next two years….to create a national network that will use what is called Wimax technology. It's kind of like WiFi…the wireless networks used in many homes and offices….but much longer range. Sprint will be partnering with Motorola, Intel and Samsung. Senior vice president for corporate strategy Atish Gude says the goal isn't so much to compete with wired high speed Internet services for PCs….although some customers may want to go completely wireless….

"There are about 200 million consumer electronic devices out there, these are MP3 players, portable DVD players, portable computing devices, PDAs, new category devices, ultra mobile PCs… navigation devices, cameras, camcorders … in some way shape or form, they are all linked to the Internet. But the opportunity to link them in a seamless, ubiquitous, always on environment, we think creates a tremendous business model."

Think of being able to connect to your digital music collection stored on a PC at home…from nearly anywhere. When will it happen…

"We intend to launch in the end of 2007 and then be growing the business and launching more markets after that."

Sprint will, of course, face competition from other carriers and some new comers as well. The promise for consumers is better and more affordable high speed wireless connections to the Internet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
