New Services for Cell Phones On Campus

Techstination feature for Friday, August 25, 2006

It's back to campus time….and at some schools it means new wireless services. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Just about every student on a college campus these days is walking around with a cell phone…and that has opened the door for a company called Rave Wireless to work with schools to offer new kinds of wireless services. Rave CEO Rodger Desai the mobile applications cover a pretty wide range…

"Anywhere from polls from professors…should we stay on this topic…or move on….to announcements from the school about class changes, to soccer practice went from field A to field B, to invitations from friends to go to events. All the way to products that can keep them safe when they're on campus or off, such as Rave Guardian. And Rave Guardian is a product where the student can use location based services to send their location and their profile when they're feeling unsafe, right to campus safety so they can be located. So Rave, for us, is a way to kind of put the campus on the phone for the student and support the kind of on the go lifestyle that student live."

Rave has signed up more than a hundred universities and colleges so far to use some or all of the applications. About a dozen will be ready to go this fall. Some are actually providing phones to students with the Rave services pre-loaded. The costs vary…but typically are paid by the university… which in turn may pass it along to the students in the fees they charge. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
