A Much Needed Bright Spot at Sony

Techstination feature for Monday, September 4, 2006

A much needed bright spot at Sony. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With a recall of millions of batteries for notebook computers costing Sony hundreds of millions…the elimination of about ten thousand jobs… and questions surrounding the upcoming release of the Playstation 3 game console…the company is in need of a bright spot. And it has one in its Bravia LCD TV line….the one that plays to women in its marketing approach. Sony flat panel product manager Dan Nicholson…

"We're seeing six times growth in 40 inch and above and this is a fairly large television. You need to kind of integrate in to the home and we've sort of dialed into that with our Bravia line. Some of these models we've been introducing have interchangeable color bezels. You'll be able to actually change five different colors so you'll be able to integrate the television into your home. "

Sony is counting on consumers investing in higher end flat screen TVs, capable of what is called 1080p high definition….spurred by the new generation of high def DVD players and camcorders. The price difference…

"It ranges anywhere from about 800 to a thousand dollars more for this technology. If you look at just the panel, there's other features we add in the line."

The competition is intense, but Sony according to figures from the NPD Group…is at the top of the heap in sales. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
