A Digital Photo Frame... in Your Pocket

Techstination feature for Monday, September 25, 2006

A one hundred year old brand name…still kicking in the digital age. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are you've got a typewriter in the attic or tucked away up in a closet….that bears the brand name Royal. These days the hot products for the company are paper shredders. But it is also carving out a niche with a variety of digital products….from inexpensive PDAs and organizers to digital photo frames. It is making devices such as key rings and travel alarm clocks that include LCD screens that can display digital images. Bob Robinson is Royal's executive director of marketing…

"There's software that we provide with the device and USB connectivity that will allow the user to very easily take the pictures that they want. 59 different pictures that you could download at any given time. And you can freeze it on one picture or have a little slide show of all the different pictures that you want. It's really a lot of fun."

The digital photo keychain sells for about 50 dollars…the travel clock with a digital photo frame…is about 60. Royal is also selling 5 and a half and 8 inch digital frames…with bright, sharp displays…for under two hundred dollars….

"This is an emerging market. We're seeing forecasts now that by 2010, 12 million of these devices a year are going to be sold."

While the travel clock with the small digital frame runs on batteries….keep in mind the larger LCD frames have to be plugged in…..which makes mounting on a wall not very practical in most situations. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
