Samsung's K5... MP3 Player With Built-in Speakers

Techstination feature for Tuesday, October 3, 2006

An MP3 player….with built in speakers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The competition in the digital music player business….continues to intensify….with Apple out with new iPods….and Microsoft planning to jump in with Zune. How to attract attention…. come up with new designs and new features. Samsung has done that with the K5. It's pocket sized….with a sleek black finish…in the 4 gigabyte model…..with the OLED screen and touch controls coming to life when the single visible switch is turned on. And says senior product marketing manager Matthew Durgin…

"With this device we have built in a speaker that you can not only take your MP3 files or digital audio files that you get from your music subscription services with you into your portable life… but you also aren't forced to only use that music with either a docking speaker or a headphone. You just simply slide out the speaker and you get full portability for the music in an environment without headphones."

The slide out speakers may not be powerful enough to fill a room with sound….but they are good enough to let you enjoy your music collection without headphones or with a few friends. Samsung says the battery life is a whopping 30 hours with earphones. Use those built in speakers, though, and that gets reduced to about 6 hours. You can find the K5 online for about 260 dollars. Apple's new 8 gigabyte Nano….sells for about ten dollars less. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
