Notebooks....Make it Big

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 5, 2006

Notebooks...that are big in every way. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Time was when ultra thin and light notebook computers were commanding the highest prices. Now... they've hit the big time. Really big. Toshiba has updated its behemoth Qosmio line...with the G35-AV660. that includes an HD DVD high definition drive....two 120 gigabyte hard drives....a Dolby sound system...a TV tuner...and....an HDMI output....to watch those high definition DVDs on a bigger screen. Product manager Eric Krondak says while it is technically a notebook...

"It comes in at around 10 pounds. So it's heavy for someone to carry around constantly from place to place. But yet it's not too heavy to move from room to room. It's got that portability aspect for consumers to actually take with them if they want to take it from their kitchen to their bedroom or a home office...or maybe even take it with them on the road...put it in an RV type of setting."

You can watch DVDs or listen to CDs...without having to boot up the computer. The price...is as big as the machine. About 35 hundred dollars. Toshiba isn't alone. Dell's XPS M2010 carries a similar price. It's more of a portable than a notebook, The keyboard is detachable... from the base and the 20 inch widescreen. It does not include, however, a high definition DVD player. At least not yet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
