Bluetooth on Your Wrist

Techstination feature for Friday, October 6, 2006

Bluetooth on your wrist. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With just about everyone, it seems, carrying a cell phone around these days....and their displays usually featuring the current time and date... watch sales have been on the decline. And some watch makers are fighting back....using the old adage, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Fossil has announced a line of watches that will include Bluetooth technology....that will allow them to display the caller ID ...when your cell phone rings. Fossil VP Bill Geiser says it's a partnership with Sony Ericsson....

"Sony Ericsson developed all the software and phone integration aspects of this. Fossil developed the hardware platform, the module. With Sony Ericsson's input we did the industrial design and then we are manufacturing and assembling the watches."

The Caller ID watches will be sold under the Fossil, Abacus and Sony Ericsson brands, and....

"After I go through a very simple pairing process, on an incoming call, my phone will ring, if I've got the ringer on. My watch will vibrate and on a very cleverly disguised organic LED, I will see Caller ID on the watch. And with a single button press I can silence the ringer as I did just there. A second press will throw it into voice mail."

For now...the watches will only work with Sony Ericsson cell phones. Citizen and Seiko are making Bluetooth watches as well...but so far only for the Japanese market. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
