Watching Cable or Satellite Channels Anywhere

Techstination feature for Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Watching your cable or satellite channels…from anywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sling Media….which has had the Slingbox on the market since last year…is out with three new members of the family. What the company's technology does is let you take the outputs from your cable or satellite box….plug them into a small Slingbox….which is connected to a high speed Internet connection. From there…you can access your TV channels…and control them….from anywhere you have access to the net. Co-founder and CEO Blake Krikorian says the original box works well….but the new models make the experience even better….and less expensive than the original 249 dollar price…

"Two of the new Slingboxes are going to sell for 179 dollars and are about 400 percent the resolution and video quality than the original one. One product is called the Slinbox AV. There's also a Slingbox Tuner, which is for people who want to just plug in their basic cable. And then lastly, we have a product called the Singbox Pro, which is for people who have high definition video sources such as a high definition DVR or a high definition cable box."

The price, 250 dollars with a high definition kit an additional 50 dollars. Sling's viewing software runs on desktop PCs, notebooks….and some mobile phones as well such as Motorola's Q. That may not sit well with mobile carriers that want to sell their own TV services. The Slingbox experience is better…because it gives you access to the cable or satellite channels you're already paying for…from anywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.-
