Lenovo Gets Taken to Court... The Basketball Court

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 2, 2006

Lenovo gets taken to court. The basketball court. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The biggest maker of computers in China….which bought IBM's personal computer business….is now the official technology partner of the National Basketball Association. Lenovo is giving the elbow to Dell. NBA Commissioner David Stern says Lenovo equipment will be used at courtside and the league will be using a new statistic…what it calls the Lenovo Stat…designed to measure team performance with particular groups of players on the floor. About how it will be utilized by coaches, Stern says…

"I know there are some who are going to say, oh just let me go out and look at the player and I'll know what to do and there will be others who will live and die by it. And that's the beauty of our sport."

When it comes to computer statistics versus gut instincts…Hall of Fame player and coach Lenny Wilkens says…

"I've always felt it's a tool. And certainly what statistics does is it just gives you more information to make your judgment by. Yeah, coaches will go by their guts or go by what they see. But at the same time, they will look at that and see….what's my best combination, where are we getting hurt….things like that. So it becomes a very useful tool."

As for Lenovo…it's an opportunity to make its brand better known in the U.S…..and the association won't hurt back in China either….where legions of fans have been following the NBA thanks to seven foot six Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
