Turning Your Cell Phone into a Hotspot

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Turning your cell phone, into a hot spot. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are, in addition to having a high speed internet connection….either cable or DSL….at home, you are paying for a data plan with your cell phone. Especially if it is a PDA phone like a Treo or a Motorola Q. Kyocera has partnered with D-Link…to create the KR1. It is a wireless router that can use an EVDO capable cell phone or an EVDO PC card….as the router's connection to the Internet. EVDO is the technology used by Sprint and Verizon. Kyocera's John Chier…

"This is a product that takes a single EVDO broadband connection either from a PC card like our Passport KPC 650 card or from an EVDO enabled mobile phone and uses that single connection to create a mobile WiFi hotspot. So it makes that connection available to multiple devices using WiFi technology."

Downlink speeds can rival those of DSL broadband. And the next generation of EVDO, called Rev A, will provide high speed connections in both directions…

"The advent of Rev A is really going to take speeds in this mobile networking category either equaling or surpassing those you would get from your desktop experience."

Sprint and Verizon plan to roll out the new high speed wireless networks in the months to come. Whether they will clamp on restrictions to prevent customers from sharing the connections around the home or office remains to be seen. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
