Digital Photos on Your Desk

Techstination feature for Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Digital photos…on your desk. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With prices for LCD screens tumbling, the market for digital photo frames is growing fast. Digital frames are LCD screens with memory card slots. They let you display single photos…or slide shows…on your desk or mantle or corner table. Keep in mind, though, you will have a power supply cable. PanDigital is among the companies with more affordable models on the market for the holidays. President Dean Finnegan…

"What we've done is taken a lot of technology and put it into the photo frame so that it's completely simple to use. There is no technology background or knowledge necessary. Anybody can use this product now. It's completely compatible with all digital cameras out in the market. And you can directly take the digital camera memory card out, put it into the frame, copy images and then put the card back in your camera. You can transfer images directly from the camera into the frame or you can transfer images from your PC into the frame."

It wasn't all that long ago when digital frames were selling for 500 dollars or more. Pandigital's 7 inch model…with interchangeable frames can be found for about a hundred thirty dollars. It not only displays still photos…it can play video and MP3 music files as well. A 5 inch screen is under a hundred dollars. And consumers are buying…

"The total market this year in the U.S. is probably 1.8 million units. Next year we expect it to be over five million units and the year after ten million."

And, says Finnegan, the prices will continue to fall. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
