Crush or Flush... Dating Service for Cell Phones

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 22, 2006

A dating service…on your cell phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Internet dating services are old news. Ask a couple how they met these days….and chances are the response will be…online. These days young people are spending a lot of time using a small screen. The ones on their cell phones. And a start up called IceBreaker Inc….is hoping to cash in with a mobile phone based service called Crush or Flush. Marketing VP Josh Levine….

"You basically upload a picture profile of yourself, then you can view profiles of other people. If you like them you crush them, if you don't like them, you flush them. And if two people like each other, we'll allow them to chat anonymously on the phone without giving up any of their personal information."

It's not as cruel as it sounds… you never know if someone has flushed you. The service is initially free but will eventually charge subscription fees. About safety issues…Levine says only those over 18 can use Crush or Flush…and beyond that…

"We link your profile to your cell phone number and you can have only one profile per cell phone number. Which means if you cause problems with somebody or you're a predator, you're causing problems, we simply delete your phone number and you disappear from our service."

The service has hired people to sign up users on college campuses. And finding Mr. or Ms. Right in your area….is as simple as narrowing your search…

"We have multiple filters on the phone that we can actually set, which means you come up there the first time and say I'm looking for this age range within this location."
