Good Luck Finding New Game Consoles

Techstination feature for Friday, November 24, 2006

If you aren't very lucky or very rich… good luck finding one of the new video game consoles. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sony and Nintendo started selling their new game consoles this month…..but getting hold of a Wii or a PlayStation 3 is a matter of great timing….survival skills….or having enough money to pay a ridiculous price on eBay. That may help Microsoft sell more of its Xbox 360 consoles….which have been available for a year now. At the top video game makers….the console shortages aren't good for sales. But Activision Executive Vice President Robin Kaminsky says the company has three new games for the PlayStation 3 and five for the Nintendo Wii…

"We're obviously placing a big bet. Activision has five titles on Wii at launch ..and titles that really appeal to a broad range of consumers. From kids to teenagers to adults."

And the games take advantage of the Wii's motion sensing controllers….which are transformed from fishing poles…to rifles…to skateboards. And number one video game maker Electronic Arts, Worldwide Studios Chief Operating Officer John Schappert says…

"I think Nintendo is taking a really interesting strategy. A similar strategy that they took with the Nintendo Dual Screen…the handheld that they launched a couple years ago. And it's we're going to zig when others are zagging."

At Sony Computer Entertainment America, CEO Kaz Hirai predicts the PlayStation will win again..

"It's my expectation that with the PlayStation 3 as well, we will quickly be able to take the leadership position and lead the video game industry as we have been doing for the past 12 years."
