A Less Painful Move to a New PC

Techstination feature for Friday, December 1, 2006

Making the move to a new PC less painful. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are lots of bargains on new PCs this time of year….and with a new version of Windows on the way, yet another reason to buy a new computer. But moving all of those files over and re-installing applications can be a daunting task. Laplink Software offers a simplified solution with a program called PCmover. CEO Thomas Koll….

"It's a very easy process. You can use a cable, you can use a home network. And with that, with a couple mouse clicks, you can then start a process that might, with lots of data, it might run overnight, but in a couple of hours your new PC is set up exactly as your old one."

Applications and all. But in some cases, programs may need reactivation….to ensure you aren't making illegal copies…

"For us it's not a matter that you copy and bypass any kind of security for programs. Our point is to make it easy for users. So all the programs that need to be activated might have to be reactivated with the manufacturer. But you don't have to look for your CDs, your keys, passwords, whatever it is…that over time, a lot of people don't have any more."

Laplink's PC mover sells for about 60 dollars…including a USB transfer cable. A downloadable version is ten dollars less. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
