A Blu-ray Equipped Notebook From Dell

Techstination feature for Wednesday, December 13, 2006

A Blu-ray equipped notebook from Dell. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. When it comes to choosing sides in the high definition DVD format war…..Dell has gone against Microsoft in siding with Sony's Blu-ray camp. Now it is shipping its first notebook PC…the XPS M1710… that includes a Blu-ray drive. Senior manager Marc Spier…

"Dell's solution will be a triple reader, triple writer. Which means that it will burn and play Blu-ray discs, DVD discs and CDs as well, all at the same time. It's one of the many advantages of the Blu-ray disc format. That distinguishes the Blu-ray format from other formats and Blu-ray from the predecessor technology, DVD.

The starting price for the Blu-ray notebook…3 thousand 7 hundred dollars. Blank Blu-ray discs….which can store about 25 gigabytes….are selling for about 14 dollars. 50 gigabyte discs are about 35 dollars. About Dell's decision to go against Microsoft and the rival HD DVD format, Spier says…

"We feel that it has the right feature set for our customers. We feel that its capacity advantage, the fact that it was a spec developed from the ground up, its many high definition viewing advantages, provides our customers and customers in general with the right and best feature set. We also feel the Blu-ray disc is a revolutionary technology, not simply an evolutionary one."

Spier says Dell plans to offer Blu-ray throughout its line up of notebook and desktop PCs during the coming year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
