Radio Goes Global...on the Net

Techstination feature for Monday, December 18, 2006

Radio goes global. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The Internet has changed many things over the last decade….and one of those things is traditional broadcasting. Radio stations around the world are no longer limited by regulated signal strength. Streaming online means they can be heard anywhere in the world where a listener has Internet access. PCs and some cell phones can tune in. And one of the neatest new devices is a small tabletop clock radio…made by Acoustic Energy of the U.K….that connects to your wireless network at home. Skipping around the world is reminiscent of the old days of short wave radio. At the C. Crane company, which sells the WiFi Radio in the U.S., Bob Crane says…

"There's a lot of people that have never tuned into a short wave or gotten the enjoyment of listening to short wave, so I don't want to ruin the feeling. But it's a spectacular feeling when you can tune in Tunisia or Jamaica or any country you want in addition to your local content, your local station."

The radio sells for about 300 dollars. It also gives you the ability to listen to music stored on your PC in another room. You can use an Internet connected PC to listen to the same stations….but the WiFi radio…makes it more simple…

"This radio gives you a radio experience rather than a computer experience."

A company called Reciva…keeps the station lists current on the radio and on the Web. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
