A Super Computer... in the Family Room

Techstination feature for Tuesday, January 2, 2007

A super computer…in the family room. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It can perform 256 billion calculations per second….and has nine cores. The most expensive chips available for PCs today…have four. So what can you buy with all of this horsepower? Sony's PlayStation 3. The PS3 is such a powerful machine…that it may take years for game makers to create titles that take full advantage of it. Sony Computer Entertainment America's Ron Eagle, says sometimes programmers exploring the potential of the machine have to told enough already…otherwise the games would never be finished…

"You know the processing power inside the PS3 no longer limits you. You know we always wanted to do, but couldn't because there wasn't enough memory or there wasn't enough processing horsepower. The PS3 has no limitations and so what we found actually is, with the dev teams, the imagination runs a little bit too wide."

Eagle says Sony is trying its best to meet demand…and supplies should improve over the course of the year…

"It's a really exciting time to be in video games and we're obviously quite excited about the next few months both from hardware getting into the consumers' hands…but also as we start to get beyond launch software and look at some of the new products like Formula One or Motor Storm or some of the downloadable games that will be coming out in March."

Pricing starts at five hundred dollars…for the 20 gigabyte version of the console. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
