More New Year Tech... Wireless USB

Techstination feature for Wednesday, January 3, 2007

More new technology for the new year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are you've got a variety of devices plugged into the USB ports of your PC. A printer….maybe a digital music player….or a digital camera. What's new….is technology called wireless USB. Belkin is out with the first wireless USB hub….that lets you plug all of those devices in over here….when your computer…is over there. Senior product development manager Mark Freeman…

"Well I think a problem that everyone has these days is clutter on the desk. What this device does … it allows you to move that clutter maybe onto a credenza across the room or another location in the room that's convenient and allows you to access those devices wirelessly through ultra wideband radio or wireless USB."

The idea is…you plug a transmitter-receiver into a USB port on the computer….and the wireless hub…that you plug your devices into…can be set up within thirty feet or so. On the downside…you may lose some connectivity speed with the wireless connection…and it is expensive…about two hundred dollars. The price of the technology will likely drop as it gains popularity….and…

"Most of the major manufacturers of USB devices… printers and hard drives and cameras and a number of different device manufacturers are planning to build wireless USB into their devices."

It can be a handy way to keep devices connected…and at the same time…out of sight. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
