Taking pictures…with that new digital camera. Advice from the best. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Rick Sammon has traveled the world taking photos….writing about photography and teaching. And with many more consumers investing in better digital cameras….he has some advice…about how much to spend…

"Well I say think about the whole digital darkroom, the whole digital system. You know you can spend a lot of money on a camera, but then you don't have any money left for an image processing program, then you don't have any money left for the printer, you don't have any money left for ink and you don't have nay money left for paper. So you really should plan out your whole digital darkroom system. Buy a camera that you can afford. For some people, a point and shoot, a compact camera is enough. For a professional like me and for people who are very serious about photography, they want to get a digital SLR, which lets you put up to fifty lenses and all different types of accessories on the camera."

Those digital SLRs are more expensive than smaller point and shoot cameras, but they have come down in price and become one of the hottest camera categories. And when it comes to taking better pictures…say when you're on vacation…one of Sammon's top tips…

"It's you snooze you lose. When you go on vacation you want to get up early in the morning and take pictures during those hours and shoot in the late afternoon. Not only because the colors are warmer, the shadows add a sense of depth and dimension."
