More Net Video is Good for Divx

Techstination feature for Monday, January 15, 2007

More video on the Internet is good news for Divx. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Divx is a company that makes software for compressing video. That makes for smaller files....for sending or streaming via the Internet....or viewing on portable players. Divx CEO Jordan Greenhall says the latest technology from the company....allows consumers to create and play high definition video....without the need for an expensive high definition DVD player...

"Divx provides high quality, high definition right now. We actually have six OEMs in the marketplace with Divx HD capable HD players which actually play true HD. It's not up-sampling, it's actually HD resolution at a quality that's comparable to what you'd get off a blue laser device. What's unique about this is that Divx HD is something that can be downloaded over the Internet. Blue laser's big, it uses a higher storage...density storage...to be able to use traditional compression and provide high quality. Divx flips the equation around, we use higher compression to provide high quality at much lower sizes, so using Divx high definition...people already can. People are routinely downloading high definition content."

When it comes to movies on disc however...the movie studios are wedded at least for now...to the Blu-ray and or HD DVD formats. To help distribute content, Divx has created a site called Stage6 on its Web site...at Divx.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
