A Web Site to Exercise Your Brain

Techstination feature for Friday, January 19, 2007

A Web site to exercise your brain. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Nintendo has had more than a little success selling its DS handheld game machines to consumers over fifty….who've snapped up a game called Brain Age. It uses a variety of problem solving workouts to ward off …or at least try to ward off…the effects of aging. Now a company called Quixit is using a similar concept on the Web. It has created a site called Happy Neuron. Sheryle Bolton is CEO of the company that has an impressive scientific advisory board behind it….and has taken games that were developed by scientists in France….and put them online…

"The idea here is that we need to cross train cognitive skills. And so there are five large groups of skills which would include memory, concentration, attention and focus, visual special skills, language skills and what we call executive function skills to actually include things like reasoning and judgment and organizational skills. And the idea is here, that we all need to do a little bit in all areas, wee need to cross train."

Bolton says there have been a number of scientific studies showing that mentally challenging games can have positive effects as people age. About what you'll find on the site, she says…

"We have forty different games on the site with another twenty coming and more all the time."

There's a free one week trial on the site. Subscriptions cost ten dollars a month. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
