Verizon Readies V Cast TV

Techstination feature for Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Verizon readies V Cast TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The picture...at least on the demos...looks great. But there are some questions surrounding the V Cast TV service Verizon Wireless plans to launch by the end of March. For instance, it hasn't announced how much it will charge for the service...which will be available only on two handsets initially. Those phones will have receivers for Qualcomm's MediaFlo technology built in. Verizon chief marketing officer John Stratton....says the experience will differ from video on cell phones today...

"In most cases, the current TV services provide you with snippets of video, little clips you might watch, we call it video snacking. But V Cast TV is a different proposition. And specifically this is a service that will allow customers to watch live TV on their mobile phones. It's actually a broadcast service that will run right to their phones and allow them to see the best of TV broadcast right to their cellular phone."

About what Verizon is weighing in deciding what to charge, Stratton says...

"Of course, there's the cost to provide the service which is in the equation. But really what we're trying to do is to enable the delivery of the service at a price that is reasonable for customers. We've been doing a lot of work in surveying the market to try to get a sense for what customers might be willing to pay for a compelling TV service."

Another question... how many U.S. consumers will want to watch TV on their cell phones. For the answer to that... stay tuned. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
