The Next Hot Gaming Platform... Windows Vista?

Techstination feature for Wednesday, January 31, 2007

The next hot gaming platform….Microsoft says it's Windows Vista. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It may not make game players forget about the Sony PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360….but part of Microsoft's strategy in convincing consumers to upgrade to Windows Vista…is games. Microsoft's director of global marketing for games for Windows…Kevin Unangst…

"The biggest difference people will notice is that games are first class citizen, right off the Start menu. And we have something new called the games explorer that makes it very easy for people to find the games that are on their system, to launch them, to use new features like parental controls for parents to restrict the kind of games their kids can play. It also extends to things like having great gaming accessories. People are comfortable with a controller. We really haven't had first class controller support. Now all the Xbox 360 gaming accessories, like the joysticks, even the wireless accessories, will work with Windows Vista."

Microsoft is working with game makers to create uniform packaging for games for Windows…similar to the uniform packaging for console games that makes different platforms recognizable. At Intel, digital homes platform manager Monesh Chokshi, says the push may help sell newer, faster computers…

"Vista in and of itself has very compelling features and I know Microsoft is very ambitious and aggressive and really pushing Vista."

Some of the snazziest new features in Vista…will only be available on PCs…chock full of memory and graphics processing power. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
