A Search Engine for Sound

Techstination feature for Tuesday, February 6, 2007

A search engine for sound. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is called a Multimodal Adaptive Recognition System…or MARS. It was developed by a company called Melodis...which is using the technology in a Web site calls Midomi.com. Go on the site… and with a microphone equipped PC…you can sing a few bars…or even hum a melody….and Midomi….will find the song you're looking for. VP Amir Arbabi ….

"Well at the highest level, we've developed what we believe to be the next generation of search and sound recognition technologies that allow you to search for music using your voice, by singing, whistling or humming. Now you don't have to be a great singer, so long as another human can recognize what you are singing, our MARS technology, which is our search engine, should be able to recognize what you're searching for."

The site…at Midomi.com…is also a community where users can upload songs and rate the singing of others. Even the company's CEO participates… (sound) The plan is to make money by selling music online…much like Apple's iTunes…

"We have a lot of other commercial content as well. We're going to be selling CDs. We have targeted advertising. We're going to offer music videos which will all bring revenue to the company. In addition, there are a lot of other applications for our technology and we're just starting the process of partnership discussions with other companies to license our technologies."

The site again is m-i-d-o-m-i dot com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
