Kodak Pushes the Print Button

Techstination feature for Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Kodak pushes the print button. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Using a new strategy….that will enable consumers to make low cost, high quality prints at home….Kodak is trying to win a share of the ink jet printer market. It has announced a new line of all in one Easyshare printers….that will use pigment based ink…with cartridges selling for about half the price charged by rivals…such as Hewlett Packard. Phil Faraci… president of Kodak's consumer digital imaging group….says the new printers will go on sale next month….and for the first several months be available exclusively at Best Buy stores…

"We have very limited supply as we start up and ramp up the new products. And as we went through and evaluated options, we said that the most effective that we could be in the start up period is by picking a single launch partner and working with them. And it also turns out that they can consume all of our capacity as we start up the ramp." Will they also have exclusivity on the consumables, on the ink? "We are always going to be and believe that it is very important to be taking and putting the consumables and the printers and the media all together."

And so the bottom line when it comes to cost per print?

"We offer a photo pack that allows people to print photos for as little as ten cents. We offer a very high end media that allows people to print for fifteen cents. Those photos are literally impervious to coffee or water or other things that you might spill on them."

Kodak says its color ink cartridges will sell for 15 dollars, black ink cartridges for 10. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
