The Internet is being used for all kinds of distance learning, but what Yamaha is doing takes the concept to a new level. It has demonstrated the ability to conduct remote piano lessons on its Disklavier pianos. Yamaha's Jim Presley….

"A promising young student in, let's just choose a city in the United States, how about Detroit, can conduct piano lessons with the finest piano teacher in the world. And we'll just arbitrarily say that that might be Moskow, Russia. And so, now, the best teachers in the world can link up with the best students in the world, without geography being any kind of a limitation."

The playing of the student is replicated on the piano of the instructor, complete with all of the nuances. And they can see and talk to each other as well…using messaging software. The piano, of course, is far from ordinary…

"The Disklavier itself has a computer built into it. And this computer comes with a LAN connection."

Yamaha is planning to take the technology beyond the demonstration phase and make it a standard feature built into the Disklavier Mark IV. Starting price…about 25 thousand dollars.
