You Too Can Sell Music on the Net

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 15, 2007

You too can sell music …on the Net. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Perhaps the American Idol phenomenon is helping more people to realize that there are some pretty good artists out there…unsigned by record labels….who are worth listening to. A Web site called Indie911…is giving them a chance to be heard….and is giving fans a chance to spread the word and profit from it. Founder and CEO Justin Goldberg…who came from the recording industry…and wrote a book called Ultimate Survival Guide for the New Music Industry: A Handbook for Hell….says the idea is to empower fans to benefit….by helping to sell the music they love…by using a Web based interface called the Hoooka…

"It's an embed code based streaming media store and player that people can use on social networks to connect with their playlists, expose new artists and share the music that they love. So it's sort of bringing the power back to the people, compensating the fans for hosting the music that they sell. So we really look at it as a revolutionary new way of acting in the music industry."

Fans can add the interface to their social networking sites…such as MySpace….and if songs are purchased through it….they get a cut…

"You're actually giving a ten percent commission to the people, the average consumer, the average fifteen year old girl who is on MySpace or Facebook or any number of social networking sites or even on blogs."

You can find more information…and indie music of all kinds at indie911.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
