Drive Makers Tout Terabytes

Techstination feature for Friday, March 16, 2007

When it comes to adding storage to computers these days…it's time to talk terabytes. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Time was …not so very long ago…when a hard drive that held a few gigabytes of data seemed enormous. But with media center PCs storing TV programs, digital music, photos and video….and high definition tuner cards and camcorders on the way….hard drive makers are upping the capacities. Seagate's Maxtor Shared Storage II…contains two 500 gigabyte drives….that can be shared on a home network. And Iomega is updating its StorCenter line. Senior product manager Scott Wells….

"Files keep getting bigger and bigger. There's more pictures, video, you've got HD, there'll be ways to get HD video into your home. And you'll be saving more of those files. As that happens, there are going to be greater needs for storage back up. And we feel that once you get those assets on your computer, you're not going to want to lose them. And we believe that the early adaptors will continue to grow into a bigger segment of the market as people realize the need for this."

Wells says the StorCenter uses what is called RAID technology…automatically creating duplicate copies of files to safeguard them…

"What that does for you ..it protects your data when you copy it over there. It's a technology that allows for a drive to fail on that device. You can replace that drive but yet you'll never lose any of your data."

It's sort of like a digital insurance policy. Iomega's starting price is about 800 dollars for one terabyte…of storage. More competition is on the way…from Hewlett Packard and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
