The Wii Wins Again... Sega Smiles

Techstination feature for Monday, March 26, 2007

When it comes to video game consoles…Nintendo's Wii continues to win. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It happened again last month. Nintendo's new game console, the Wii, outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 by a wide margin. Price…the Wii costs just 250 dollars… no doubt has something to do with it. But so does Nintendo's notion that game play….with its unique motion sensing controller….matters more than high end graphics. At Sega, Charlie Scibetta says while his company is developing titles for all of the platforms…the success of the Wii didn't come as a surprise…

"We saw that early. We were there with Super Monkey Ball and Banana Blitz at E3 last year. We got on board and believed in that product I think a lot earlier than other people did. And as a result, we had products there at launch that sold really well. So we're very happy with what the Nintendo Wii is doing." In terms of development plans, have you shifted things, even though you saw this coming early? "We believed the Nintendo Wii early and we're continuing to do that. I wouldn't say we've had a massive shift where we're putting a lot more resources towards it. We believed in it early and we're continuing to do that. So we think that it's a very interesting platform to develop for. You have to take that controller into consideration much more than other ones because it has the motion sensing on it."

Among the titles Sega has on the way… Sonic and the Secret Rings and Alien Syndrome. Rival Electronic Arts, in the meantime, is just out with Tiger Woods Golf…for the Wii. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
