A Rival TV Service for Mobile Phones

Techstination feature for Wednesday, April 4, 2007

A rival TV service for mobile phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Qualcomm's MediaFlo service'.which will deliver TV channels to phones sold by Verizon Wireless and AT&T'.appears to have the edge'..but it does have competition. Modeo has been demonstrating TV service on a phone'that uses what is called DVB-H technology. The service has been tested in New York City'and says Modeo president Michael Ramke'.

'From a distribution standpoint, this is broadcast. Our goal is to reach as many subscribers in the U.S. as possible. So the next steps for us are to line up retail distribution partners, folks like wireless operators, MVNOs, even people like cable providers who now are having much more of a mobile phone, mobile device focus'we look at those as key outlets in terms of taking on our package of channels and then retailing that to their end customers.'

Ramke says the advantage DVB-H has over Qualcomm's MediaFlo'.is that it is an open standard and is being more widely adopted outside the U.S. And he says you may see it in a wide variety of consumer electronic devices'

'Portable media players, MP3 players, gaming devices, laptops, we had a live demonstration with a Dell laptop.'

Among the questions up in the air'how much will consumers be willing to spend for TV service they can watch anywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
