Bringing Digital Content to Your High Def TV

Techstination feature for Friday, April 6, 2007

Bringing digital content to your high definition TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Apple has its new box…Apple TV….that connects content stored in iTunes to a TV. The 300 dollar box transfers content to its own 40 gigabyte hard drive…for display. Netgear's latest device….on the other hand…the Digital Entertainer HD…is designed for streaming. It lets you watch live TV…from a PC equipped with a tuner card on your network…and can also play music, photos and video…either from PCs or Macs on the home network…or from the Internet. Product manager Jamie Ching…

"One of the big features is the ability to play back from a number of different storage devices. Whether it's a Macintosh, a PC, a Linux box or a network attached storage device. The Digital Entertainer HD uses file sharing to go out and actually search throughout the network to find video or digital media files and then collect it into one big library that you can search through. Another nice feature is the ability to play YouTube streaming videos."

Keep in mind, to stream high definition content, it's advisable to use a wired rather than a wireless network connection. The Digital Entertainer HD sells for about 400 dollars. Netgear's previous standard definition model can be found online for about 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
