AT&T Says Customers Lining up For iPhone

Techstination feature for Thursday, April 12, 2007

AT&T says customers are already lining up for the Apple iPhone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. AT&T….which has exclusive rights to the iPhone which is due to arrive in June….says a million people have signed up to be notified when it is available. And while some rivals say the price…which will start at 500 dollars…is too high for the iPhone to become a mass market device, AT&T wireless president for national distribution Glenn Lurie says…

"I think we'll see the response in June as we see the sales come through. I would just say this, a device that does all the things that the iPhone does, takes the place of multiple items, right? It might take the place of a regular cell phone, it may take the place of an iPod, it may even take the place of a smartphone. So when you add all those up, we're very comfortable where the price point is, the only thing I'll say is, we'll just let sales do the talking." You've said Cingular and Apple will continue to collaborate and maybe find other opportunities for handsets and devices. What other kinds of things may be on the horizon? "I think what we're focusing on around this is innovation. I'm not at liberty today to talk too much in the future…but I'll tell you this. You get a company like Apple with the experience they have, the reputation they have and innovation and simplicity…working hand in hand… we're very excited about what we can do together."

For now at least, AT&T is confident there will be no shortage of iPhone customers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
