Turning a Mobile Phone Into a Projector

Techstination feature for Friday, April 20, 2007

Turning a mobile phone into a projector. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. You can't go out and buy it just yet, but Texas Instruments, the number one maker of chips used in mobile phones, says it has the technology to allow phones to be used as projectors. Senior Vice President Greg Delagi…

"The key technology here is our DLP technology that's used in both televisions as well as front display, front projectors for things like conference rooms. So what we've done is basically taken that technology and as we continue to advance it, we've taken that and tuned that to the point where it can be integrated inside the form factor of a handset. Now as wireless terminals continue to be more and more media rich, what we find is having options, in terms of being able to display some of that content, either still images or video clips or what have you, in a larger format than what is accommodated through most handsets, the projector is a natural fit, over time, to be able to take something and display a presentation for a business meeting, photos with loved ones or exchange video clips between probably younger people than me."

Delagi says while the technology is still in its early stages, TI is talking to handset makers about it….and sees big potential for mobile phones that can display pictures or videos on walls. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
