A House That Produces Energy

Techstination feature for Friday, May 18, 2007

A house that produces energy. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Imagine a house that doesn't rely on the local electric or gas company for heating and cooling. It doesn't rely on solar or wind power either. Mike Sykes…and his company called Enertia….have won the grand prize in this year's Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge. The challenge is a collaboration of the History Channel and the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Sykes is being honored for his invention which infuses treats the wood used to build a uniquely designed house…so that it can heat and cool itself. Among the judges…Apple co-founder and inventor Steve Wozniak…

"This is a guy that's been working on this process for 18 years and he's built a lot of houses that are very energy efficient and you know, this is the right time for that anyway. He's got lots of patents for it. The wood serves as a reservoir. It makes the house hot when it needs to be and cold when it needs to be. It's liquids inside the wood, if you have the right kind of wood. And he's got some chemicals that make it work even better…but he has a method of designing houses for the air flow throughout and keeping a lot of light in them. And when you get a house from him, the pieces come in the mail and you just bolt them together, all you need is a drill, an electric drill." Are you going to build a house? "Actually, I, and I'm not the only one that's decided we're going to build one of his houses."
