A Familiar Voice...in a Portable Nav Device

Techstination feature for Friday, June 15, 2007

A familiar voice …in a portable navigation device. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The world's largest maker of portable GPS systems… TomTom….is adding some new capabilities. Among them….the ability to record and use your own voice….or the voice…of say…a spouse….to tell you which turns to make. TomTom USA President Jocelyn Vigreux says the new TomTom Go 720 will have that ability….and the ability to let users make additions or changes to maps….

"If a consumer desires to do so, TomTom users will be able to update their maps, with the help…their help obviously as they're going to be able to do their own changes, but also receive changes done by the rest of the community at large. And that is something extremely powerful in this industry. You can feel extremely confident that if you are using a TomTom device, you always have the most up to date mapping information."

The technology is called Map Share….and will arrive on the Go 720 next month. It will sell for about five hundred dollars. Some existing models may be upgradeable as well…

"The spirit of this feature is to make its use as wide as possible, within the TomTom user base. Some products will be backward compatible and will have the opportunity to use that feature.
