The Latest Online Threats

Techstination feature for Wednesday, July 11, 2007

The latest online threats. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Online threats… phishing schemes and scams…seem to get more cleverly disguised all of the time. One of the latest has been proliferating in email…that says in the subject line that you have a greeting card from a family member. Some even appear to come from legitimate ecard sites like Hallmark or Blue Mountain Arts. Another recent scam….a site that was supposedly selling iPhones….asking for payment via Western Union. If you're looking for an iPhone…it's best to go through Apple or AT&T. About the latest threats, McAfee Avert Labs security research and communications manager David Marcus says…

"It's an interesting evolution. It's kind of a lot of the same thing for new threat vectors like some of the up and coming technologies like voice over IP, instant messaging, mobile, new waves of cyber-crime. Things like that. It's oddly enough some of the old, same techniques transitioning toward new technologies. Like some of the new stuff that's coming out for voice over IP is getting a lot of spam for voice over IP, a lot of the instant messaging technologies are getting a lot of spam for the instant messaging technologies." How does spam translate to voice over IP? "The technical term is called SPIT. It's a horrible terminology. But you get a lot of the same kind of pop ups and the same kind of floods of information."

There are increasing number of security threats aimed at mobile phone users…but so far…not many have arrived in the U.S. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
