Creating Your Own High Def DVDs

Techstination feature for Monday, August 13, 2007

Creating your own high definition DVDs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With consumers buying more HD screens for the family room…and high definition camcorders coming down in price....the question is how do you put the two together. How can you create HD discs…to watch at home. One answer would be to make a costly investment in software and a Blu-ray burner for your PC…..and learn how to use it. Another, is Sony's latest solution. The DVD Direct VRD-MC5. Marketing manager Bob DeMoulin….

"The major new improvement with the VRD-MC5 DVD Direct is the ability to do high definition. When connected to one of these Sony AVC-HD hard drive based or memory stick based camcorders, we can transfer up to 95 minutes of native 1080i resolution video onto a regular 4.7 gigabyte DVD. And that DVD will then play back in a Blu-ray disc player."

The discs will play back in Sony's PlayStation 3 machines as well. The company has simplified the process….. What you can't do with this version of the DVD Direct…is hook it up to a computer. About which HD camcorders it will work with Demoulin says…there are limitations…

"Unfortunately, everyone's implementation of USB with these camcorders is unique. So the DVD Direct MC5 only works with Sony high definition camcorders at the present time. That could change.

The VRD-MC5 is priced at 229 dollars….making it an affordable solution. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
