Techstination feature for Thursday, August 23, 2007

The onslaught of iPod add-ons continues. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There seems to be no end in sight to the number of iPod accessories being brought to market. And the iPhone is creating some brand new categories. Logitech is among the companies updating its line up of add on dockstations and speaker systems designed for the iPod. Global product manager Wells Brimhall says among the new systems…is one designed for the bedroom…

It's the Pure-Fi Dream. It's the first iPod bedroom music system. It's a premium music system that's designed specifically for use in the bedroom." How is it different from the myriad of other alarm clock/iPod docks that have hit the market? "Good question. First and foremost, it actually sounds good. We designed it to be something that had the best acoustics possible. So it's not a tinny alarm clock. It's a full featured music system with separate woofers and tweeters that sounds fantastic."

The system also includes pre-set buttons that can be assigned to specific playlists on the iPod. The price, about 250 dollars. Another new model is the Elite…an update to the AudioStation released last year…

"It's the same excellent, award winning acoustics with improvements. We include the iPod playlist pre-set feature, includes a backlit remote as well as perforated metal grills."

The list price is about 300 dollars….underscoring again how big a business these iPod add-ons have become. Logitech has plenty of competition at the high end from companies like Bose and at the low end …from iHome and others. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
