Teaming Up Against Apple

Techstination feature for Thursday, August 30, 2007

Teaming up against Apple. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With Apple iTunes having a more than 70 percent share of music download sales….some of its biggest competitors are banding together. Real Networks, MTV and Verizon Wireless are partnering in what is called Rhapsody America. MTV's Urge music service, created with Microsoft, is being folded into Real's Rhapsody…..and Verizon will sell songs from Rhapsody America on mobile phones. Marketing VP Kevin Nakao says Verizon will be a key partner in taking business away from Apple….

"There's a whole bunch of different ways that people listen to music now. What was the most popular selling music device in the past is going to change and that's where the deal with Verizon comes in. More and more people are using their mobile device as their primary method of both communication and entertainment. And so our deal with Verizon is set up to be able to get the ubiquity of Rhapsody. And the other thing that's really important is at Real, we developed a platform to support a whole bunch of different devices and manufacturers. So there's a number of different devices from iRiver to SanDisk that all support our Rhapsody music subscription service."

Rhapsody America will be working with Verizon to make the subscription service… for about 15 dollars a month…available on a broad range of mobile phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
