Microsoft's Streets and Trips…gets connected. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft has been making its Streets and Trips program for about ten years…..but its features have often lagged behind competing software packages that provided true GPS routing and re-routing capability. But with the 2008 edition…the product has taken a big leap forward. The high end package, Streets and Trips with Connected Services, has some valuable new features….that use Microsoft's MSN Direct radio signals. Group product manager Ziya Genceren…

"Now when you're traveling, without the need for an Internet connection, you'll be able to see live traffic conditions. Second, you'll be able to see the gas prices around the area you're in. So you can pick where the lowest price for gas is."

Before you buy…check the MSN Direct Web site to see if there is coverage for your area. The price…which includes a year of connected services and the GPS receiver…is about 180 dollars…

"For people who don't want to spend a lot of money for a portable navigation device, Streets and Trips is really the right solution."

The software alone sells for 40 dollars. While the features are impressive…one of the roadblocks, if you will, is using a notebook PC ..presumably on the passenger seat next to you….is awkward at best compared to portable mounted or built in GPS systems. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
