Seagate Readies DAVE Drives

Techstination feature for Tuesday, September 11, 2007

A petabyte...is not something you scold your dog for. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Seagate has announced new back up drives....that hold multiple terabytes of data. It wasn't all that long ago, when computer users were happy to have megabytes.....then came gigabytes......and now terabytes. It may not be too long....after we reach 999 terabytes ....that we'll be talking about petabytes of storage. Who needs terabytes of digital storage space. Seagate CEO Bill Watkins.....

"If you think about today, it's all about digitalizing your home. Two years ago, for the first time, we started selling more storage in the home than we did into business. Which was really a startling piece of data for us, who've been in the storage business this long. But we're actually selling a lot more storage in the home and if you think about how many drives, how many different types of storage devices you have in your home, you start look at, well this content is important. This is your personal content, whether it's your movies, your films, your pictures of your kids."

Next up...is a pocket sized hard drived Seagate calls DAVE....for digital audio video experience...

"This is an external drive. It's WiFi or Bluetooth and sixty gigabytes of storage. And allows you to stream to your handheld device, whether that's a phone or a video, handheld video."

The plan is for mobile carriers and such to begin selling the DAVE drives early next year. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
