Techstination feature for Tuesday, September 18, 2007

International calls on mobile phones…at bargain rates. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. A company called Cubic Telecom…based in Ireland….is looking to make a global splash with SIM cards that can give customers local numbers in countries around the world….and a line of phones that can work on GSM networks or on WiFi. GSM carriers in the United States include AT&T and T-Mobile. CEO Pat Phelan says the service will be available in 160 countries….

"The world is flat but telephony isn't. We want every call to be a local call. So you can take your phone to Brussels, London, Russia, New York and it will always be the same."

The company planning to sell dual mode phones that will work just about anywhere in the world…and can use the SIM card you may already have…

"You put your everyday SIM into this phone, you've now got a WiFi GSM phone. You can make and receive your calls when you're in WiFi. You can talk to any other Cubic Mobile anywhere in the world, totally free. If you want to do business in an overseas country or you've got a family overseas, we'll give you a local number in that country."

Phelan says his goal is to change the game of international telephony…to make calls affordable for everyone. He says he doesn't see his company working against traditional carriers. His hope is to work with them. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
