Verizon Wireless Battles the iPhone

Techstination feature for Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Verizon Wireless battles the iPhone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Apple has sold more than a million iPhones along with its exclusive carrier AT&T since the end of June. Rivals…including Verizon Wireless and Sprint….have been searching for handsets to compete. What Verizon Wireless has come up with are four new music capable handsets…including two from LG that feature touch screens…the Venus and the Voyager. Verizon Wireless VP Joe Saracino says the Venus…as you might guess from the name…is aimed at women buyers…

"It's got dual screens on the front. The bottom screen is a touch screen, the bottom screen is an interactive screen. So all your menu and navigation controls are on the lower screen of the device. So it opens up and you have a full numeric keypad on the device. The LG Voyager is sort of a step up from the LG Venus. Full touch screen on the outside. So not two screens, full touch screen. And it opens up with a QWERTY keyboard on the inside. It's the first touch screen device with a full QWERTY keypad."

Also new…a low cost, tiny music phone called the Samsung Juke. In addition, Verizon Wireless has announced it will carry a new version of the Blackberry Pearl..

"The Pearl that we are bringing to market will be the first 3G Pearl. So it's on our EVDO network."

Which will speed up email and Web browsing. Important, since none of the phones announced include WiFi…which is a feature of Apple's iPhone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
