AT&T Unveils the Duo

Techstination feature for Friday, November 2, 2007

Lower prices and more features on Windows Mobile handsets. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With lots of competition from Apple and Nokia….and Palm working on a new version of its operating system….Microsoft is pushing for wider adoption of its Windows Mobile operating system for smart phones. AT&T…which unveiled the Tilt from HTC not long ago… featuring a screen that slides up and then tilts for a laptop like viewing angle…. now has the Duo from Pantech. Slide the screen up vertically…and you've got a phone style keybad….slide it horizontally…and you've got a full QWERTY keyboard. It features WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, runs on the carrier's highest speed network and has a two hundred dollar price tag with a contract. At AT&T, which also has the exclusive on Apple's iPhone, business markets president Kent Mathy says the Duo may attract a different type of customer…

"It's going to be interesting to watch. We're pretty excited about it. Again we think it is a crossover device and we think the form factor will be very compelling and appealing to a broad range of consumers."

About whether the flood of smart phones on the market might be too confusing….Mathy says…

"It's our goal to have the richest array of devices for consumers to choose from, so you can really tailor that specific device to your needs."

Another new Windows Mobile device that just hit the market…is the 149 dollar Shadow from HTC, being sold by T-Mobile. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
