Is it Time for a Home Server

Techstination feature for Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Is it time for a home server? Microsoft thinks so. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft has officially launching what it calls the Windows Home Server. The first product using the technology is being sold by Hewlett Packard….but there are more to come…from Iomega and others. Microsoft senior product manager Joel Sider says the new products are not the same as the external hard drives on the market that can be added to PCs or networks…

"Microsoft and its partners like HP and others really feel that this is a new kind of product, kind of a new category. What it does, it helps families that have more than one PC protect and organize and more effectively share all their digital content. Their music, their photos and their videos, their documents. How it really stands apart is probably number one, is just kind of sheer simplicity."

How big might the home server category become?

Well, say that in the U.S. there are 20 million homes approximately that have more than one PC and a broadband connection. Worldwide, that number is somewhere around 60 million."

A number of companies are devising add on software. HP is selling the 500 gigabyte version of the MediaSmart Server for about 600 dollars. A terabyte model lists at about 750. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
