More Notebooks Go Ultra-Portable

Techstination feature for Thursday, September 2, 1999

No need to lug around that heavyweight anymore. The hot notebook computers are ultra-portable. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Sony started it with the Vaio. Now, IBM, Dell, Toshiba, Gateway and Compaq are all making it easier than ever to carry all the computing power you need without dragging one shoulder a foot closer to the ground than the other. Compaq's new choices include the Armada M300...

"What that is, is a sub three pound ultra-portable laptop which basically has all the same functionality that you have on a normal desktop product but in a very small form factor. Again, less than three pounds, less than an inch thick."

Compaq's Ben Williams. The M300 series starts at under two thousand dollars. But you should know the floppy and CD ROM drives are sold seperately. For about half the price, if you don't need a full fledged PC, the Aero 8000 could do the trick. It runs the Windows CE operating system...

"With the Windows CE operating system you get things like instant on. So you no longer have to boot up when you're trying to actually start the machine. It just basically starts where you've got it."

Some other advantages...longer battery life and Smartcard technology that prevents anyone else from being able to access your information.
