A New Tune for Microsoft's Zune

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 15, 2007

A new tune for Microsoft's Zune. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. While it was the butt of some jokes, Microsoft built a respectable media player with its first generation Zune. It just didn't give many people are reason to buy a Zune instead of an iPod. So Apple has kept rolling along. Now Microsoft is out with Zune 2….and the line now consists of an 80 gigabyte model along with flash memory based four and eight gigabyte versions. Microsoft brought the design of the hardware and software in house…and the result is a better product. Senior product manager Terry Farrell…

"It's really a custom fit, focused on simplicity and just all the real common core activities that Zune users will want. And then the Marketplace has been redesigned and restocked. We have a ton of new features in there including music videos that we're selling, DRM free MP3s."

All of the models have built in WiFi….allowing songs to be shared among Zune users…for up to three plays….and devices can now sync wirelessly with PCs. And there's a new Zune Pad for navigation…with the flick of a finger. Not quite the iPod Touch…but not bad…

"We really just focused on simplicity throughout the whole experience and just what are the core things that people care about. We did an exhaustive amount of usability and customer conversations."

Prices range from a hundred forty nine dollars up to two forty nine. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
