Personalizing Those Impersonal Gift Cards

Personalizing those impersonal gift cards. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Gift cards are always popular around the holidays….but they aren't the kind of present that you would call personal…or perhaps thoughtful. A company called Cardlab has partnered with Visa to change that....allowing you to add your own digital photos and design your own card. CEO David Jones….

"Giftcardlab is the first ever design your own Visa gift card site. So for the first time consumers are going to be able to upload pictures, upload graphics, art, whatever they like and actually make the impersonal gift personal. We actually print the cards in a completely on demand fashion, so each individual card can be unique. If consumers aren't interested in actually uploading their own images and photos, art… we also provide a gallery of thousands of already pre-designed images that they could choose from. So basically what we've created is a site that finally makes the most convenient gift of the holidays also personal for people."

The personalized Visa gift cards cost 5.95 above the dollar value. The turnaround time from the time you upload a photo or design and order is about ten days. About the potential market Jones says…

"Well, I think we all know how popular gift cards are. I mean it's expected to be around a hundred billion dollars in spend on gift cards this holiday season."
