Adding WiFi to Your Digital Camera

Adding Wi-Fi to your digital camera. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Just about everyone is taking digital pictures these days….and for some folks…the toughest part can be transferring their images from camera to computer to online photo sharing or printing site. A company called Eye-Fi is out with a new type of memory card….that transfers your pictures wirelessly and automatically. Co-founder Ziv Gillat..

"It looks like an SD card, it behaves to the camera just like an SD card. The secret sauce is in some chips and some software that we've added to the card that also make the card Wi-Fi enabled so you can get your images out of the camera while you're in a Wi-Fi area that the card knows about." And this will work in any digital camera that takes …will accept an SD card? "Yeah. Any digital camera. Today you have 75 percent of all camera shipments are new SD cameras and it will work in any SD camera."

The card…which includes two gigabytes of storage…comes with a card reader and sells for about 99 dollars. The software lets you set it up to access your home wireless network….so photos are transferred to your local computer…and to any number of online photo sharing sites. One problem is that the transfer can be fairly slow….and you'll have to adjust the automatic settings on your camera that would normally turn it off after a certain period of inactivity.
